STATIONS OF THE CROSS INSTALLED IN CEDAR GROVE

“He opened his arms on the Cross to embrace humanity”

The Way of the Cross is a walking path located in a cedar-grove garden that includes sixteen individual wayside chapel stations. Each station corresponds to a particular incident in the final hours of Jesus’ Passion and Resurrection. This active reflection on the Passion allows you to enter fully into the mystery of the Redemption. This prayer calls all of us to a better understanding of our own suffering and helps to work on overcoming remorse or resentment and be filled with love and gratitude for Jesus' example.

The walk through the Stations offers a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer focusing on the chief scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. You come to each Station, with certain prayers at each and follow with a devout meditation on the various incidents in turn. An inter-religious prayer format is being developed for all faiths so that all can have a meaningful spiritual experience in this environment. You can focus on one station or do as many as you feel necessary. There are benches at most stations for you to sit and reflect or journal your thoughts. The entrance is marked by a newly renovated information gazebo with sample Stations of the Cross.

The Silo—A Canopy of site and sound

From a place to store food to a space that captures the beauty of light and resonating sound, these silos remain an humble testimony to the presence of God. These renovated silos give one the feeling of how “large” God is. Just as the cathedrals of the world have their great domes over the altar, this simple farm structure now lends itself to the same use as a place of worship. Its new architectural elements allow the natural forces surrounding it to create its unique spiritual environment.

When you enter the enclosures during the day, the Sun passes through the stained glass windows to provide glorious light and soothing color. As your eyes look up, the blue or white sky becomes your canopy, with its greatness to contemplate. At night, the moon and stars provide views that are otherworldly. To sit still in its enclosure is to feel the nurturing of silence.

If you were to use vocal prayer or song inside the silo, a special effect is the reverberating sound that bounces off the sides of these slender structures to provide a feeling of immersion into its resonance. Both your body and soul can sense the absorption of word or music. Its environment is well suited to personal prayer, small group prayer and Taize worship services.

The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes

When Mary joined Jesus in Heaven, she was given her heavenly space. She has on many occasions appeared to some of us and given us glimpses of the heavenly splendor. She comes so that we may see and hear how the love of God is lived out in Heaven and what awaits us who wish and work for this loving environment on earth. One of these times she appeared to a peasant girl named Bernadette in Lourdes, France.

Our Grotto, which displays a recreation of the apparition of Our Lady of Lourdes, is an enclosure that invites you to visit with the Blessed Virgin Mary. As you pass through the gates, you enter a simple garden, just as Mary’s home would be like. She welcomes you in to talk and sit for a while. Her message calls us to a closer relationship with her son who came to show us all how to love.

This enclosed structure surrounded by a garden and overlooking a winding creek has benches for sitting quietly to pray or reflect on the peace which Mary has shown us is the promise of Heaven. It is ideal for praying the Rosary which is a meditation on the "Mysteries" or events of the life of Jesus. The garden space is large enough to also have group prayer.

These beautiful new iron gates were manufactured, installed and donated by Jim Allison, owner of Custom Fence & Repair in Manassas. The new gates replace the very old wooden ones which had fallen into bad condition.

The Outdoor Labyrinth Cathedral
This is a 39’5” Replica of the labyrinth located in the Chartres Cathedral
Labyrinth—A Journey Inward

St Augustine believed that “all problems can be solved by a walk.” As a walking ritual for self-discovery, a labyrinth is a way that goes inward to the center and returns to the outside using the same path. It joins the needs of the body with that of the soul. As a tool, it can be used to help clear the mind and focus you on the journey inward. The path’s twist and turns emulate the truth of anyone’s life and helps by guiding you to your true self and back out into the everyday world.

Our Labyrinth pattern is based on the famous Christian one on the floor of the Chartres cathedral in France. The medieval builders believed that what existed on the earth was a dim reflection of a higher reality, but it still had to reflect the truth in number and proportion. So the Labyrinth was created in proportion to imitating a real journey to the holy city of Jerusalem. This faux pilgrimage using the labyrinth with the rosetta center representing either Jerusalem or Heaven was understood to have the same eternal and celestial properties as the real one

Many pilgrimages were taken to find a way back to God. Usually suffering can cloud the mind and you can end up wandering aimlessly. The labyrinth helps you to take a journey that focuses you back home. This clarity thus liberates you from confusion or fatigue. You gain the ability to pay attention to the details, good and bad, of your life but not let them overwhelm you. By paying attention to all the events in your life and listening carefully to your body, you can be guided to healing because you live from the place inside yourself that really matters.
